Is Olive Oil Good for Dogs? Written by Jennifer Lesser

Olive oil has an array of health benefits for humans, and many of these are also applicable for our four-legged friends. These range from boosting the immune system to improving coat and skin condition. Though it's always important to monitor your pet's caloric intake, olive oil might just be worth adding to your pet's diet in moderation. Health Benefits of Olive Oil for Dogs Among olive oil's many benefits for dogs (and humans) are the fact that it is rich in phytonutrients as well as vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids. It can help keep Fido's skin moisturized as well as promote a shiny coat. However, that doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea to apply olive oil directly to your dog's coat--it's far too tempting for most dogs, as they'll just want to lick it off. Here are some other benefits of incorporating olive oil into your pup's diet. Improved Appetite If your dog has been balking at their kibble lately, a drizzle of olive oil shou...

What Does Your Dog’s Urine Color Mean?

Image
What is normal urine color for dogs? The normal color of urine from a healthy dog or cat is transparent yellow.  Veterinarians  sometimes refer to this color as “straw yellow,” “pale gold,” “amber,” or “clear yellow.” The most accurate way to assess urine color is to examine it in a clear plastic or glass container against a white background. Urine is made as a normal result of metabolism and removal of cellular wastes. Normal urine is sterile and the color can vary depending on what your pet has recently eaten or drunk. If you’re wondering why urine is yellow, it’s due to the presence of a substance called urochrome which is excreted by the  kidneys . What do different shades of yellow mean? The intensity of yellow color in normal, clear urine indicates the concentration or dilution of urine. In simplest terms, dilute urine is associated with increased water excretion and concentrated urine correlates with less water. Dilute urine will be almost colorless while hi...

Image
How to Add Years to Your Pet's Life By Lorie Huston, DVM    Anyone who has ever had a dog or cat wishes just one thing — that he or she has a healthy and long life. Here are five tips that can help your pet do just that. 1. Feed a high quality diet. Pets fed a high quality diet have a shiny hair coat, healthy skin, and bright eyes. A good diet can help strengthen your pet’s immune system, help maintain his or her intestinal health, help increase his or her mental acuity, help keep joints and muscles healthy, and much more. 2. Keep your pet lean. Pets that are overweight are at risk for a myriad of health issues. Obesity is the number one nutritional disease seen in pets currently and studies have shown that being overweight or obese can shorten a dog or cat’s life span by as much as two years. Why? Being overweight or obese puts your pet at risk for joint disease, heart disease and diabetes, among other things. 3. Take your pet to the veterinarian regularly. All pets, i...

10 Heartwarming Ways to Show Your Dog You Love Them

Image
  1. One word: snuggles Most dogs, like 99.99 percent out there, love to snuggle. We all get so busy with work, kids, chores, house projects, etc. that it can be easy to forget that our furballs would love nothing more than to snuggle up in our laps. So even if it’s only for 15 minutes a day, take the time to nuzzle up with your pup and get a little extra bonding in. 2. Make playtime a priority Again, we’re all so darn busy and tired these days that when our pups are running around with boundless energy, it can seem like a nuisance. I know I’ve had days where it’s like, geez dog, can’t you just chill out and let me be? 3. Teach them a new trick When you first get a dog, training is top of mind. But then as time goes on, it’s easy to become complacent. Heck, Toby used to be a pro at rolling over when he was younger, but when we tell him to do that now, he gives us a befuddled look. If you’re looking to spend more quality time with your dog, teaching them a new trick is a fabulo...
